How to Check Criminal History in Graves County
A useful Graves County criminal history check starts by deciding what must be proved. The circuit clerk holds the official District and Circuit Court files. The sheriff or a city police department holds its own incident and arrest reports. The jail can confirm a booking or present custody, while Kentucky systems cover statewide court history, corrections, and supervision. One source cannot answer every question.
Collect the full name used at the time, prior spellings, date of birth when accepted, an approximate year, and any case, citation, report, booking, warrant, or DOC number. Label each number. A police report number is not a court case number, and a jail booking number will not always lead a clerk to the signed judgment.
- Call the Graves Circuit Court Clerk for a known local case and ask whether it is a District or Circuit matter.
- Order a statewide Kentucky court report through AOC when the search must extend beyond Graves County.
- Request an incident or arrest report from the law enforcement agency that created it.
- Use the jail or VINE for current custody, then use KOOL only when state custody or DOC supervision may apply.
- Compare the summary with the clerk's docket and order the specific signed or certified document needed.
Graves County Records at the Temporary Courthouse
The December 2021 tornado changed where Graves County criminal case records are found. Kentucky's current court page directs the public to the Graves County Courthouse (Temporary), 1102 Paris Road, Suite 21, Mayfield, KY 42066. The Office of Circuit Court Clerk is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and can be reached at 270-247-1733. Older county listings still show 100 E. Broadway and an older officeholder. Those pages can send a visitor to the wrong place.
The Graves County government home page shows the county's present public-service setting.
The image helps distinguish county government information from the judiciary page that controls the current criminal-court counter. Call before requesting a large or archived file. Tornado damage and judicial retention rules mean an older file may be at a records facility or may have been lawfully destroyed. If it is stored elsewhere, ask the clerk for both the facility and file-locator number.
Official Kentucky Background Checks
Kentucky's public statewide option is the Administrative Office of the Courts criminal-record report, ordered through FastCheck or a One-Time Request. It is based on Kentucky District and Circuit Court data from all 120 counties. The report includes traffic and misdemeanor activity for at least five years and felony activity dating to 1978. It excludes federal, juvenile, mental-health, domestic-violence, and expunged or purged matters.
Any person may request an AOC report on another person. If a third-party request returns a record, AOC sends notice and a copy to the subject. FastCheck users register and retrieve results online for 30 days after processing. One-Time Request results arrive by mail. Orders are handled in received order and cannot be expedited. The current base price should be checked in the official ordering screen; online card processing adds 2.25 percent or $2.50, whichever is greater.
Fingerprint-supported checks run through Kentucky State Police procedures for authorized programs. No fixed commercial fingerprint enrollment site was confirmed in Graves County. Call the Graves County Sheriff at 270-247-4501 or KSP Post 1 at 270-856-3721 before traveling. A person seeking a national self-review can use the FBI Identity History Summary process, which carries an $18 FBI fee plus any separate capture or mailing cost.
Graves County FastCheck and Signed Records
FastCheck is broad, but the result itself warns that it is “Not an Official Court Record.” It can show the county of origin, case number, original and amended charges, disposition, charge and disposition dates, and a clerk memo. It does not replace the judge's signed order, judgment, or full docket kept in Graves County. A blank result also does not prove that no record exists. The event may be too new, confidential, expunged, outside Kentucky, under another spelling, or held only in an older file.
The AOC FastCheck and One-Time Request portal shows the statewide ordering route.
The ordering screen supports a Kentucky court-history check, while the Graves Circuit Court Clerk remains the source of the signed local file. If an AOC entry looks wrong, call the Records Unit at 800-928-6381 and the Graves clerk. AOC may correct its own data or direct the caller to the local court that entered the case information.
| Input | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Full name and prior names | Finds likely matches and spelling changes |
| Date of birth | Separates people with the same name |
| County and case number | Helps the clerk locate the local court file |
| Requester contact details | Supports delivery and required notice |
| Billing information | Completes an online AOC order |
Types of Criminal Records
A Graves County arrest can produce several linked records without creating one all-purpose file. The arresting agency writes the report. Graves County Jail makes the booking record if the person is lodged. District Court receives a citation, complaint, or early felony proceeding. An indicted felony becomes a Circuit Court “CR” case. Kentucky State Police, AOC, and the Department of Corrections then maintain separate statewide records within their own authority.
- Incident and arrest report: the agency narrative, alleged offense, time, place, officer, and arrest basis.
- Booking record: jail intake identity, booking time, initial charges, holds, bond, and custody status.
- Court case file: filed charges, motions, orders, judgment, sentence, and docket events held by the circuit clerk.
- State report: the AOC court summary or KSP identifier-based criminal-history data within each system's scope.
- Custody or supervision entry: KOOL data for qualifying DOC inmates, probationers, parolees, or diversion participants.
A warrant and a sex-offender registry profile are distinct again. A judge or court issues the warrant, law enforcement executes it, and access can be limited while it is active or sealed. KSP publishes registry data for statutory safety purposes, not as a list of all people ever accused of a sex offense.
Four Graves County Arrest Records
The local flow is best read in order: Arresting Agency → Graves County Jail → Graves District Court → Graves Circuit Court after indictment. Fingerprints may also reach KSP, and the final court disposition may feed AOC. Each handoff changes what the record can say. An intake allegation may be amended, declined, dismissed, acquitted, or resolved by a plea or trial.
The official Graves County agency directory lists the sheriff, Mayfield Police, Wingo Police, and KSP Post 1.
The directory is useful because the agency that made the arrest keeps its own report. A Mayfield address does not prove Mayfield Police handled an event. The sheriff or KSP may have jurisdiction, especially in rural parts of Graves County. Identify the creator from the citation, jail confirmation, or dispatch details before filing a request.
Note: A booking charge is an intake allegation, while the clerk's final order records how the filed court charge actually ended.
What a Graves County Criminal Record Shows
The fields depend on the custodian. A jail entry focuses on intake and custody. AOC focuses on court activity. KOOL may add a DOC or PID number, aliases, physical descriptors, supervision dates, risk rating, KRS code, felony class, sentence, parole action, or projected release information. The circuit file supplies the best proof of the charge as filed and its judicial outcome.
| Name and identifiers | Name, aliases, date of birth where releasable, and system-specific numbers |
|---|---|
| Arrest and booking | Agency, time, place, report or booking number, intake allegation, bond, hold, and custody |
| Charges and statutes | Original and amended charge, KRS code, count, felony class, and offense date |
| Disposition | Dismissal, acquittal, conviction, plea outcome, and disposition date |
| Sentence | Term, concurrent or consecutive structure, and court-ordered supervision |
| Custody or supervision | Facility, probation, parole, diversion, or projected release data when applicable |
Common court terms have narrow meanings. “Disposition” is the result of a charge. “Nolle prosequi” means the prosecutor formally chose not to continue it. An indictment is a grand jury accusation, not a finding of guilt. “Concurrent” sentences run at the same time, while “consecutive” sentences run one after another.
When Graves County Record Searches Fail
No official Graves County jail roster, daily booking log, or public active-warrant name search was found on the open web. That gap calls for a clear fallback chain, not an unofficial people-search or mugshot site. For current custody, call Graves County Jail at 270-247-4373 or use Kentucky VINE. For a sheriff report, contact the sheriff's records counter. For a filed case or bench warrant tied to one, call the circuit clerk.
KOOL serves a later and narrower stage. It can show qualifying state custody and DOC supervision, but it is not a county arrest log. A person can be released from jail and still appear in KOOL because probation, parole, or diversion is active. The reverse is also possible: a new Graves County booking may not yet have a DOC record. KOOL warns that data newer than 120 days may not be finalized.
For a possible warrant, call the sheriff and clerk before making travel plans, and consider legal advice about surrender or bond. Never pay a person who demands gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or a remote kiosk payment for an alleged warrant. An old copy can also lag after a warrant clears, so confirm status with both the issuing court and law enforcement.
Public Access Laws
Kentucky's Open Records Act covers records held by state and local agencies, subject to the law's residency provisions and exemptions. The request goes to the office that actually holds the record. That means Graves County Sheriff for a GCSO report, Mayfield Police for an MPD report, the circuit clerk for a court case, and KSP for state registry or criminal-history material. Privacy, juvenile, victim, medical, confidential-source, and active-investigation information may be redacted or withheld when the governing law allows it.
Key statutes:
KRS 61.870 through 61.884 sets the Kentucky Open Records Act request and review framework.
KRS 61.878 lists privacy and law-enforcement exemptions that can limit release.
KRS 17.150 and 17.151 govern criminal-history record duties and dissemination.
KRS 431.073 authorizes relief for qualifying felony convictions after statutory conditions are met.
A denial should identify its legal basis. Kentucky law provides Attorney General review under KRS 61.880 and a route to circuit-court review. Public access does not mean every part of every file is open, and an agency must assess the actual record rather than use a broad label as its only explanation.
Graves County Sheriff Record Requests
Chief Deputy Jeremy K. Prince is the named open-records custodian for the Graves County Sheriff's Office. Written requests can be hand-delivered, mailed, or emailed to jprince@gravescountyky.gov. The counter is at 1102 Paris Road, Suite 6, Mayfield, KY 42066, with weekday hours from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The phone is 270-247-4501 and fax is 270-247-7674. A typed letter or email is allowed; the sheriff's form is not mandatory.
Describe the record, date and time range, location, creating agency, report number if known, and desired format. “All records about a person” is less precise than a request for the GCSO arrest report and transfer paperwork from a named incident. The policy says the office will advise whether records are available and provide a written explanation within five business days if they are not ready for inspection.
| Product | Posted cost |
|---|---|
| In-person inspection | No inspection fee posted |
| Paper copies | $0.10 per page |
| Nonwritten record on office USB | $7.00 |
| Other nonwritten copy | Actual cost |
The office will not use a requester-provided flash drive. Ask for a quote when the record needs another medium or when certification is required. That detail can prevent an avoidable second trip.
Sealed, Expunged & Restricted
Juvenile cases and several confidential case types stay outside ordinary public reports. Kentucky also provides expungement for qualifying matters. Most cases dismissed with prejudice or ending in acquittal on or after July 15, 2020 are automatically expunged after 30 days, apart from traffic cases. A charge held to a grand jury but not indicted can use AOC-497.2 after the statutory six-month wait, with no filing fee for that petition.
For petition-based relief, first obtain AOC eligibility certification. The certification costs $40 and is valid for 30 days. The packet then goes to the Graves Circuit Court Clerk. For eligible felony relief under KRS 431.073, the usual waiting point is five years after sentence completion or successful completion of probation or parole, whichever comes later. The prosecutor has 60 days to object.
An eligible felony application carries a $50 nonrefundable filing payment and another $250 if relief is granted, plus certification. Expungement is not complete until the $250 is paid. When granted, the judgment is vacated, charges are dismissed, and public agency records are removed as the statute directs. AOC keeps limited order data for later certification, and a prosecutor may retain a nonpublic law-enforcement copy.
Graves County Custody Record Choices
Custody and criminal history answer different questions. Graves County Jail, 103 E. South Street in Mayfield, creates the local booking file. VINE can help track custody status and notifications from participating custodians. KOOL reports qualifying Kentucky Department of Corrections custody and supervision. The circuit clerk holds the sentence and disposition that explain why a person entered or left those systems.
The official Graves County roster identifies the justice offices that serve the county.
The roster gives local office context, but agency pages and the Kentucky judiciary page should control when names or addresses conflict. The sheriff site names Jon Hayden, the county lists Jailer Randy Haley, and the current judiciary page names Emily Ward Buzanis as circuit clerk. Older county material contains stale information, so confirm an official's name before addressing a time-sensitive request.
- Booking
- Local jail intake after a person is lodged.
- Probation
- Court-ordered community supervision administered by Kentucky DOC.
- Parole
- Conditional release from prison under state authority.
- VINE
- A custody-status and notification service, not a full case-history report.
- KOOL
- The Kentucky Online Offender Lookup for qualifying DOC custody and supervision.
Criminal Records by City in Graves County
Graves County has two incorporated cities, not three. Mayfield had 10,017 residents and Wingo had 573 at the 2020 Census. Water Valley is a census-designated place and former city, so it does not receive a city guide. Police reports stay with the city agency that created them, while bookings and court files move into county systems centered in Mayfield.
Mayfield Criminal History
10,017 residents · Mayfield Police reports route separately from Graves District and Circuit Court files.
Wingo Criminal History
573 residents · Wingo Police uses phone and mail while county records are kept in Mayfield.
A city officer's arrest can still create a Graves County Jail booking and a Graves District Court case. An indicted felony moves to Circuit Court. The city police report never becomes the same document as the court judgment, even when both describe the same event.
Graves County Records Across 557 Square Miles
Graves County covers 557 square miles in Kentucky's Jackson Purchase. That distance matters for residents of Wingo, Fancy Farm, Symsonia, Sedalia, Water Valley, and other communities who need a Mayfield counter. A phone call can confirm the custodian, current location, file status, and copy method before a long trip. Rural location can also change which agency created the first criminal record: the sheriff and KSP serve areas outside the city departments' usual reach.
The official county history documents the Jackson Purchase setting and Graves County's size.
The county's geography explains why remote request channels matter. It also helps explain why a city name alone may not identify the right police agency. Give an exact place and date when asking dispatch, the jail, or a records custodian to trace an incident.
The county department list is a final check for local agency contacts. It reinforces the split among sheriff, city police, KSP, jail, and court custodians. Use the current agency page whenever a directory and an office page disagree.
